Review of The American President (1995) by Emma L — 06 Jul 2008
When I first saw this movie as a teenager I enjoyed it as a sweet romantic comedy with some vaguely interesting political "bits." Watching it again recently, having spent time in the US, studied US politics, and, of course, being familiar with other work by Aaron Sorkin, I was struck by just how intelligent it is about the political environment and just how much it fits into a relatively short running time.
It has all the hallmarks of Aaron Sorkin's other work - a smart script that is never patronising to the audience, characters that are fully developed and about who you care, and a strong story. On top of that, it has a great cast who give good performances.
Definitely worth a watch.
