Review of The American President (1995) by Andres G — 21 Jan 2011
Rob Reiner's film combines schmaltz to a Richard Curtis degree with the speed, intensity and inteligence of Aaron Sorkin's script and an exceptional supporting cast led by Martin Sheen and Midget J Fox making this a romcom so far above par it feels unfair to label it as such. Douglas and Benning shine in the leading roles and the question of a single President dating under the glare of 24 media coverage provides an interesting and unique backdrop to the standard format.
The production levels are sublime and whilst those who can't shake partisan feelings may be offended by the obviously liberal bent of the script that's no real reason to avoid this, unless you really are a gun nut who doesn't believe in global warming.
West Wing fans will recognise not only the set but many of the actors and occasional themes such as proportional responses and the 26/8 nature of the President's job; indeed such is the success of Sorkin's first dalliance into this arena that it's almost hard to believe he didn't want to write the TV show.
An exceptional comedy drama that has lost none of its charm or shine after fifteen years.
