Review of The American President (1995) by Barbara R — 29 Jul 2011
A heart-warming tale written by Aaron Sorkin which provided the precedent for award-winning show, The West Wing. In this movie we see the walk-and-talks, the set and even the same beloved character roles which would later appear in The West Wing.
Micheal Douglas plays an amazing President; Martin Sheen plays President Bartlett in the show. Martin Sheen plays his Chief of Staff in the film, his role is analogous to character Leo McGarry in the show.
Michael J. Fox is the pre-cursor to Josh Lyman, and Robin McCall and Leon Kodak are the forerunners of C.J. Cregg and Toby Ziegler in their respective personalities. Douglas, Sheen, Fox and Annette Bening in particular, all brought Sorkin's unique writing style to life with superb acting.
I doubt there will ever be a political film or film on the Presidency quite like it again.
