Review of The American Astronaut (2001) by Eric A — 16 Oct 2010
Deliriously weird and endearingly handcrafted (dig those special effects paintings) and probably 20 minutes too long, "The American Astronaut" straddles the line between Expressionistic space western and pure nonsense.
The film is best when employing music as a narrative device (McAbee is pioneering new delivery methods for exposition and backstory here) or as a rhythmic substitute for the lack of "true" action beats.
Quite an imagination.
