Review of The American (2010) by Matt F — 18 May 2011
If you're looking for a George Clooney version of your standard Bond or Bourne spy flicks, this is definitely not it. In fact, that's probably the only major inherent problem with the film itself.
The Italian landscape is beautifully shot, the three major performances are executed very well (especially Violante Placido as Clooney's love interest), but any movie fan who watches this might be ultimately disappointed that Clooney didn't go for a straight-arrow action piece here.
"The American" recalls some neo-realistic films from the 1960s, with slow and deliberate pacing and dialogue; in other words, it's not for everyone. If your expectations should be in line with the film's style and intention, you'll enjoy it a lot more.
