The American is a film that works as a pastiche of other assassin's-last-job movies because of Corbin's savory style and Clooney's abilities as an actor. While Rowan Joffe's screenplay strives for some existential meaning, Corbin and Clooney are more interested in creating a suave little genre picture in which viewers can absorb and enjoy beautiful Italian scenery, women and Clooney's performance as an assassin with some serious doubts about his existence.

Still, Clooney's performance reaches depths the screenplay only approaches through some heavy-handed butterfly-related moments. The American isn't Le Samourai, but it works as a beautiful, morally bleak movieland escape.
