Review of The American (2010) by Jim M — 24 Jun 2011
Jack/Edward (George Clooney) time in Sweden comes to a violent end forcing the Weapons Specialist to flee the country and lay low in a small Italian Village. Here his contact Pavel (Johan Leysen) gives him one last job, construct a special rifle for Mathilde (Thekla Reuten). It is also here that "The American" steps out of the shadows for the first time in years to befriend the Priest Father Benedetto (Paolo Bonacelli) and the Prostitute Clara (Violante Placido). After a life time alone and in the shadows will Jack be able to leave that world behind?
A low key Spy Thriller that attempts to give us the glimpse of the emotional and spirtual cost of living a life alone amidst lies and violence. Who Jack works for is never spelled out, nor does it matter really. George Clooney gives a convincing performance. Placido is a beautiful woman I mean wow, just wow. See it.
