Review of The American (2010) by Kristijonas F — 02 Aug 2011
Much like Tom Ford's "A Single Man" and even the Guy Ritchie-directed Dior Homme short-film, this stylish film is assembled with near technical perfection. There is no wrong shot. The picaresque Italian backdrops, the emotional restraint, the self-indulgent shots of rifle assemblies - all these things paint The American as a subdued and meticulous film.
And when this restraint and tension is splashed with spurts of horrifying violence, that is when the film truly soars.
