Review of The American (2010) by Shane B — 21 Aug 2011
I don't mind art films; I don't mind movies that are much more character driven than action driven (in fact I like a lot of movies like that); and to be truthful, I wasn't expecting this to be a huge action film at all, which I'm completely fine with, not every movie has to have a lot of shooting in order to be good.
But while The American is well shot and has some pretty decent acting in it, especially from Clooney, the movie suffers from a lack of pace and ultimately from not knowing what direction to go in. Ten minutes in, I didn't care what was going on, and I don't get bored very easily.
If a movie can't hold my interest, than it has committed the worse crime possible. Ultimately I was disappointed with The American. I have to give credit that they were trying, but unfortunately trying wasn't enough for this film.
