Review of The American (2010) by Eric K — 17 Sep 2011
I just finished watching it and I really enjoyed it. It's definitely not your average Hollywood thriller. Its not a spy movie at all in fact, though the marketing clearly led you to believe it was.
Its really a throwback to some of the classic European/Italian thrillers of many years ago. If it had been shot in black and white I doubt you could tell the difference, except that of course there's George Clooney (who many of the ladies will enjoy seeing). There's also the lovely Irina Bjorklund for the guys and more that a little flesh on both sides so its definitely R rated for adults.
I loved the complexity of the story, the music/score was great and definitely benefits and befits the movie and the acting was very good, especially some of the smaller characters (like the priest if you see or have seen the movie. I gave it four stars for being a great movie. It just didn't earn the 5th star because I don't think its one of those movies I'm goint to look to watch over and over again.
Still...very worth a watching for the adults who appreciate a good, well written, complex story that's well acted and directed.
