This movie is second cousin to Lost in Translation. Meaning, the title indicates a lonely existance of a foreigner by nation, culture or a job.
The "American" is a name locals give to this strange man. Can he connect to the beauty as portrayed by an European girl?
The scene in which Clara dips her naked body in the river is also the cinematographic divide between the two worlds. George Clooney, buttoned to the neck, onlooking the 100% eurostyle naked girl. I almost could not bear the strangeness of that scene. It seemed as if I were watching two different films.
I wish there was a sequel...lots of material there.
