I wanted to like this film, I really did. Part time Nescafe salesman George Clooney is a good actor, he has natural presence, magnetism and can convey more emotion with a simple facial expression than most actors can only dream of.

The cinematography is great with effectively simple camerawork. Sadly, uninspired (and uninspiring) dialogue, a hack performance by Paolo Bonacelli as the Priest and a lot of moments where the whole thing drags by mean that I can only give this one star.

It takes itself way too seriously and seems to be preoccupied with being as weighty as possible. More attention should have been given to making it interesting. Got to checking my watch regularly a long time before the end.

Clooney doesn't need a fast paced plot or lots of action, just see the excellent 'Michael Clayton'. But 'The American' is far too boring for even him to make it worth viewing.
