"The American" 10 Scale Rating: 6.5 (Decent) ...
The previews for some movies make them look better or worse than they really are ... but in some cases, they make them look like an entirely different sort of movie. "The American" was sort of billed as an action packed spy movie. It wasn't. Not that there is anything wrong with that because it ended up being an all right film, just don't expect a spy/action movie.
"The American" tells the story of an assassin who decides to take it easy for awhile in Italy. While he is there, he accepts a job making a weapon for another assassin to use. Eventually, he starts to suspect that the target will be him ...
It is a slow moving movie, but not necessarily in a bad way. The pacing sets the tone and is supposed to be a slower film. A lot of attention is given to detail and setting and the set up is well done. The reason that I didn't rate it higher is that at times they went a little too far with it and it was hard to remain interested until the film's climax. It was almost as if they need extra footage to fill in at spots.
The end game, however, was great. When the American starts to suspect that he is the possible target, it gets really interesting and makes you wonder what is actually going on. Furthermore, the ending was worth the wait.
