Review of The American (2010) by Steve B — 02 Mar 2012
Clooney takes onboard a very serious, subdued and quiet role as a ruthless assassin who like a lot in this kind of genre has had enough, wants a clean break and the powers to be don't like it and think he's lost his edge and so try to knock him off.
The whole movie has a tense atmosphere and a lot of quiet scenes, very rural and organic filming as the locations are all small, tight Italian villages, cobbled streets and alleys, minimal traffic and hardly any musical score.
It sets the mood well and in my opinion is like a tame and quiet version of 'Ronin' but has elements of 'Leon' included. I don't think it's meant to be a non-stop action 'Bourne' movie and takes a realistic and different slant.
