Review of The American (2010) by Marcus B — 08 Apr 2012
In a film that many have deemed boring, George Clooney delivers an unusually laid-back performance. In my eyes, he did extremely well with it. He portrays an American spy, named Jack, in a small village in Italy.
However, this is not a stereotypical spy film. You would expect the classic violence-romance action thriller, but this film is quite the opposite. The violence is very limited, but perfectly timed. The majority of the movie shows Jack's relationship with the different people he meets.
Clooney's timing is perfect, and his dialogue, although limited, is key in the development of a sense of ambiguity. Although it can be slow at times, solid acting performances and an extremely-well developed plot lead to a solid four star film.
