Review of The American (2010) by Joshua L — 25 May 2012
This is a great film! In a similar vein as Antonioni's The Passenger with Jack Nicholson (another European film which revolves around an American). The American builds upon ambiguity and creates a wonderful tension that grips to the end.
Nothing in this film is certain, the characters are not spelled out for us. Scenes are drawn out and you are ill at ease throughout the entire picture. This may make it difficult for some sit through who are used to films with quick pacing and morally unambiguous characters.
That said, this film remains for me simple, clean and very satisfying.
