Review of The American (2010) by Victor O — 05 Jun 2012
If you're looking for the typical George Clooney actioner or Hollywood spy thriller, this is not it. Clooney plays it atypically subtle. And the film does not feel typically American (despite the title). Much more of a character piece, quiet and measurably paced, it still maintains a suspense throughout. While it may not rise to level that it strives to, it is still a worthwhile view.
As a side note: I saw Clooney as a modern Cary Grant in this film (and more so than ever before). They both are ultimate Hollywood leading man, movie star, icon. And while this film and character are not typical Grant either, I could imagine Grant playing the same sort of role later in his career, in an attempt to do something against type. As this film plays to Clooney's strengths (of charisma and star power and perception as the hero protagonist), while at the same time running against the grain, so would it too with Grant in a similar vein. But also similarly, would Grant be able to pull it off?
