Review of The American (2010) by Katherine P — 10 Jun 2012
A beautifully shot spy thriller that is far too serious for it's own good. George Clooney stars in this Euro-thriller that favours style over substance and (attempts) to favour character over plot.
Unfortunately, Corbijn doesn't quite get under the skin of the assassin and this, combined with Clooney's empty performance makes The American difficult to absorb. Perhaps if Corbijn could decide whether he wanted to make an existential film or a retro romance the audience might have found it harder to toss this one into the pile of so many other films that aren't nearly as profound as they think.
But yes, it is very stylish.
