Review of The American (2010) by Roy Hector K — 10 Aug 2012
This is one of those movies which does not overlay a musical score on the "quiet" scenes, so you end up hearing just the silence or ambient noises. And it has a lot of those scenes. For most of the movie, there are interesting points which sort of enlivens things up just when it is starting to get boring and dragging.
However, the relatively slow pace does catch up with the movie eventually, and it does sort of end up a bit dragging towards the latter part of the film. The end scenes is also a bit predictable to me.
It is a decent spy thriller, but not really that great, just sort of mediocre. The scenes of the Italian countryside is nice, but not overly so. Overall, just an average film for me.
Final note: As you can see from this site, 66% of the critics liked it, but only 37% of the reviewers did. Which shows you how out of touch most of the movie critics are these days.
