Review of The American (2010) by Alex G — 09 Dec 2013
This feature orchestrates a silent building tension that deconstructs the life of our leading figure. Magnificently shot and horrifyingly tragic, the few moments of sound and dialogue command an incredible power.
The director has built a story where nothing feels comfortable or rewarding--an embodiment of Jack. This is a masterpiece and I am shocked to find that "slow and understated" stories are now considered "boring and vacuous.
" The depth comes from those moments of silence and the few moments where the silence is broken.
