The American is slow paced and somber. George CLooney character is lonely, depressed and stoic throughout. If you don't like that in a movie then it's not for you. That said, I enjoyed it and loved the cinematography.
The Italian location was beautiful and the movie itself was joy to watch despite the slow pace. I didn't find it boring at any point but I enjoy movies like this so I had patience for it. I felt the 66% rating it received was way too low.
It deserved much higher but that's what happens when people don't get it and don't see the artistry behind it.
