Review of The American (2010) by Anna H — 27 Aug 2011
I think this is probably the first minimalist action movie I've ever watched. It's the antithesis of a Michael Bay film, the action and dialogue is kept to minimum and seemingly nothing eventful occurs for long stretches of the film.
Clooney works as a stoic hitman who seems to be losing his touch and he somehow makes all the quiet scenes interesting to watch (ala Tom Hanks in Cast Away). What little twists there are though make for a stronger impact.
It's very much a mood piece. I just wish the script was just as unconventional as the execution of the story.
