Review of The American (2010) by Michael V — 14 Nov 2011
Now I absolutely loved this movie. But I can understand why many didn't. First off it was not marketed correctly. The trailers showed this as an intense action/drama. Couldn't be farther from that.
Now you do get a few short moments of shooting but nothing that what it was made out to be like. And this movie really isn't for an American audience. Especially for you retards who love that Transformers shit.
This is an intelligent piece of character study. So those without patience and depth will likely be disappointed. Not because of the movie itself, but because of its style of delivery. What I mean by this is that it communicates so much by saying so little.
Clooney throughout the film speaks with his eyes and slight body language with such an intensity and clarity of focus, that one can almost imagine what was going on in his head. Everything he did was with such caution and precision.
Corbijn captures the small villa Italy scenery beautifully. After watching it I wanted to leave and go straight there. In the end this is not a film for everybody and that is just fine by me. Allows me to enjoy this gem more.
But I think time will prove this is a great movie.
