Review of The Amazing Spider-Man 2 (2014) by Christian B — 16 Mar 2015
A film that promised so much fails in so many ways, a summary of all that's wrong with this instalment:
- it's overly long (of which very little drama/character development actually materialises).
- Jamie foxx as Electro is awful, he's overly pathetic and his reason to suddenly hate Spiderman just doesn't work, as well as the fact that he can just suddenly dissolve into electric current isn't explained and is implausible.
- the Green Goblin's origin is ridiculous and doesn't make sense. It is rushed without proper development to do the character justice.
- all the villains (including the awful casting of the rhino) are too 2-dimensional, no development, especially compared to The Lizard in the first film which was great casting and a great telling of a tragic hero kind of story.
- Andrew Garfield makes a great Spiderman but unlike his portrayal in the first one he is a poor Peter Parker.
- the sound design and musical score makes it feel like a 2 and a half hour long music video reliant too much on its visuals.
- the most interesting part of the story is his fathers backstory which is disappointedly skipped over with a cop out video explanation.
- the introduction/setting up of the sinister six at the end is tacked on for the sake of 'building a universe' i.e. jumping on the MCU bandwagon.
- Emma stone (Gwen Stacy) is the only saving grace along with the end battle with the goblin and ultimately her death, this is the only interesting fight and piece of drama in the whole film.
- thankfully this film is that bad it jump started spiderman into being part of the MCU thanks to sony's incompetence of handling the Spiderman property.
