Review of The Amazing Spider-Man 2 (2014) by Shane S — 29 May 2015
The second film in a reboot of the Spider-Man franchise does exactly what torpedoed the original series in Spider-Man 3. They try to say too much and none of it's as good as what they could've said. Follow me? I think I speak for everyone when I say I'm sick of seeing some incarnation of the Green Goblin. It's kind of funny in a way. They finally get the Goblin story right. Gwen Stacy dies as she should and I just couldn't give a s***. I'll give them credit for that but I've seen him WAY too much. It's something they should've gotten done THREE movies ago.
Electro's connection with Spider-Man is interesting but his sudden and intense 180 in his attitude towards Spider-Man is forced and doesn't really make sense. Rhino seems like an afterthought. It's like he's only there to tease a Sinister Six movie, which isn't right. Also, no one cares if Aunt May is trying to become a nurse. First off, why? Second off, BORING!
I was intrigued by the Richard and Mary Parker storyline. They should've delved more into that. This is another example of what I meant when I said that what they actually say isn't as good as what they could've said. Cut out the Nurse May subplot and really dig into Peter's parent's past. I was also intrigued by George Stacy "haunting" Peter. Gwen's story line is a little interesting though, but still basically throwaway in quality.
It's also kind of ironic that they commit another mistake from Spider-Man 3. They focus too much on a boring villain when they should be focusing on another more interesting villain. Give Rhino the screen time you would've given Harry. God knows he brings much more to the villain table than Goblin ever will. HE'S GOT AN F***ING MECHANICAL RHINO SUIT THAT SHOOTS MISSILES FOR F***S SAKE! I've seen the Goblin but I've never seen that. Show me more of that!
Have Rhino team up with Electro OR, better yet, give him his own plot that Electro interferes with, leading to a villain supremacy battle. Spider-Man takes on the winner. Follow those steps and you probably wouldn't have to have Marvel step in and reboot the franchise AGAIN!
AND MARVEL, PLEASE, WE KNOW HOW UNCLE BEN DIED. WE DON'T NEED TO SEE IT AGAIN!
