Review of The Amazing Spider-Man 2 (2014) by Jak-Luke S — 23 Jul 2017
A big fat, bloated colossal mess up from start to finish. This entry has two things going for it, firstly the performances from both Garlfielf and Stone who have a fantastic dynamic and razor sharp chemistry, with the former complete and utterly embodying the role.
Second, the comic book aesthetic as it looks perfect and straight out of the page - that's literally it. The film is focused complete and utterly on building a world that isn't ready and the edit is downright atrocious, with a bloated running time of 142 minutes.
Twenty that happen after the climax and so one purpose of regurgitating the same thing over and over. It's patronising and dishonest at every turn in what it wants to be, with absolutely no clear direction.
Jamie Fox is completely miscast and DeHaan can't find any weight in a script that is borderline grotesque. The amount of characters who just add nothing to the pot and only serve the purpose of just building a fucking world genuinely makes me sick to my stomach because somewhere here is a fantastic and gripping film.
All it needs is a stricter and stronger edit, which we'll never get and that's what makes it all the disappointing to not get to see Webb's idea for his trilogy, surely the backlash would've forced SONY to tighten and develop better, but no they cancelled the entire thing - what a complete waste and a joke on that front.
