Review of The Air I Breathe (2007) by Kane R — 16 May 2009
I was pleasantly pleasantly surprised. I take it to be a good sign if I flick over a movie and end up watching the entire film without noticing, and this was when I was about ready for bed. This film does try very hard to be all artsy and allegorical, but im not sure it completely achieves that, the concept isnt original but its ineresting enough, but overall it all seems a bit pointless, theres nothing really tying it all together.
Really it should emphasise the better points, the fact that all the performances, at least from the main characters are actually rather excellent. Sarah Michelle Gellar helps us to forget the woeful days of scooby doo (and sequel), as well as reminding us of early buffy episodes, cruel intentions and the fact that she can be quite cute when she needs to be.
She gives a refreshing performance compared to what we associate wth her, Forrest WHitaker gets away with overacting once again, kevin bacon is convincing as a forlorn doctor, and brendan fraser is the epitome of cool, even if he doesnt exactly suit the character.
Despite the gripping plot and action (what there is of it), each vignette doesnt really seem to have any purpose, a lot of lives are lost for no good reason, we just see how someone dying is a drop in the ocean of events that is human life in general.
Something we already know. That said, a thoroughly enjoyable film, that I recommend to anyone who enjoys films, particularly ones under the impression they make you think.
