Review of The Age of Innocence (1993) by Mitchell W — 01 Jul 2007
One of Scorsese's best films from the last 20 years, second only to "GoodFellas." The script simplifies the novel a bit, but it's still heartbreaking. A rich, gorgeous production, many critics have cited Visconti's "The Leopard" as a major influence, but I think the picture has a closer kinship with Welles' "The Magnificent Ambersons.
" Unlike most period pieces, the camera is completely liberated, but not to a gratuitous degree. This isn't a perfect film - as much as I like Michelle Pfeiffer, she's miscast here - but this is probably the last Scorsese film I was completely satisfied with.
Daniel Day-Lewis is excellent as Newland Archer, restrained but hurt and burning with unrequited love.
