Review of The Age of Innocence (1993) by Cale W — 26 Sep 2012
Martin Scorsese directs this film adaptation of Edith Wharton's novel. Daniel Day-Lewis stars as Newland Archer, a gentleman who, after becoming engaged to May Welland (Winona Ryder), meets May's cousin Ellen Olenska (Michelle Pfeiffer). Archer tries to use his influence and social standing to improve Ellen's reputation as she is on the verge of a scandalous divorce. After becoming acquainted, Archer and Ellen begin a doomed love affair.
The film is stilted at times but mostly well acted and directed. The cinematography and costumes in particular are excellent. Daniel Day-Lewis and Michelle Pfeiffer are both excellent and engaging in the lead roles.
