Review of The African Queen (1952) by Kate P — 11 Jul 2009
One of the most quintessential adventure movies of all time....and also one of the quintessential romances. Wonderful wonderful, and exactly what I want to do with my life. Also great from John Huston, great because so much of it is shot on location, so the MAKING of the film is an adventure in itself.
..and that kind of thing is apparent on the screen. From those sweet moments when Bogie and Kate fall in love...to the moment they think all has gone to fuck but still want to marry each other...it's a movie that tells a great story, and within that, speaks loads about love, duty, loyalty, and the spirit of adventure.
This is what a romance should be....not just a person obtaining some sort of ideal mate and leaving it at that but...two of them against the WORLD!! Adventuring TOGETHER!!! Can there be any more sublime pact of humanity??? This movie has inspired so many more, you can't even separate some movies today from what this has added.
