Review of The African Queen (1952) by Kristen S — 06 Jul 2010
Somewhat overrated in terms of its standing in the american canon, but it would be wrong to underestimate the craftsmanship at work here, both in the screenplay by john huston & james agee and in the beautiful, lush jungle photography by jack cardiff.
hepburn and bogart are both playing ugly here, a time-honored tradition in the quest for oscar gold. both are incredibly solid, even if bogie is at times a little out of his depth. the digital restoration on the new DVD is pretty spectacular and it's great to finally have this classic back to its original luster.
