Review of The African Queen (1952) by Nikhil M — 23 Aug 2012
Great adventure romance film, not to mention one of the finest films of the 20th century. Humphrey Bogart finally got his due when he won the Best Actor Award for his role as Charlie Allnutt. Was it his best performance ever? Of course not.
However, this award was for his turn as Sam Spade, Rick Blaine, and Philip Marlowe. The chemistry between Bogart and Katharine Hepburn was pure electric. I absolutely loved the banter between them, especially when she tries to get him to quit drinking.
Give me a break. Have you ever heard of a sober tramp steamer captain? Of course not! Not one exists. The script by James Agee was excellent and he adapted the C.S. Forester novel quite well. Excellent work by John Huston once again.
By far one of the greatest films I have ever seen. A must see for all Bogart fans, a film worth owning.
