Review of The Adventures of Tintin (2011) by Marissa P — 24 May 2013
'tintin' is a great film to critique because it has so many levels worth looking at, and while being more of a good movie than a bad movie, it sure does have it's low points .. 'tintin' is what you get with an extravagant budget and state of the art technologies, motion capture, computer animation, processing power .
. but none of that means for squat without vision .. the scope of this project is massive, with huge set pieces which might as well be the entire world because thats what it feels like watching giant ships battle on hundred foot seas and single takes capturing action over acres, maybe miles upon miles of land .
. our characters inhabiting this world are some of the most realistic looking humanoids to ever grace our rods and cones .. but they don't always work, some, like tintin himself, is quite personable and might as well be real if he weren't so perfect at everything, but the captain on the other hand is such an oaf and ridiculously stupid that unlikeable barely grazes the surface of terms I could use to describe .
. his alcoholism is confusing, at times giving him super powers that could seem desirable to younger viewers and other times inhibiting him enough just to annoy adults .. I wonder what all this emphasis on this alcohol really means and what it's doing in a supposed kid's movie .
. the action scenes, while epic and ingenious in design do begin to wear on one a little bit, but it doesn't really detract a lot more than a thought about just how complicated things are, but it doesn't ever really try to be believable in the first place .
. so where does tintin fall in terms of greatness .. half way? three fourths? in my opinion if it misses even by a percent its not great and that's that ..
