Review of The Adventures of Tintin (2011) by Joshua B — 02 Sep 2012
Character development is an aside in The Adventures of Tin Tin, for the films focus is on the first half of the title. In the spirit of Indiana Jones, Tin Tin is a globetrotting treasure hunt in search of a MacGuffin, in this case a pirate's treasure.
The plot is basic enough, and fairly faithful to the source material, though it plays with several Tin Tin stories at once, packing them into one adventure. For the first major film adaptation of Tin Tin to hit the big screen more than 70 years after the comics' original publication began is a bit surprising, especially as the character is likely all but nonexistent to today's young audiences.
Clearly, however, he is not for Steven Spielberg, Peter Jackson, and the others involved in bringing this character to life, for they likely grew up with Tin TIn. And it is perhaps unsurprising that it took this long for the character to be realised in this way, as motion capture animation technology has allowed Spielberg to do things here that he could never have done in a live action film.
It is those elaborate set pieces that inject a sense of exhilaration and adventure into the film, and, Avatar aside, motion capture has never looked this good.
