Review of The Adventures of Robin Hood (1938) by John G — 26 Feb 2009
One of Errol Flynns best costume epics. His recreation of the title character is both amusing and in a lot of ways almost "playful". There are outstanding performances by virtually every star in the film, and the epic swashbucking scenes are outstanding, considering how long ago the film was made.
The return of Richard III at the films climax, while historically inacurate in the extreme, leads to a truly inspired epic battle. Flynn and his frequent film foe, Basil Rathbone, in this case playing the role of Guy of Gisbourne, have a lengthy and well-choreographed "duel",in the finest tradition of films of this genre.
