Review of The Adventures of Robin Hood (1938) by Kenneth L — 30 Apr 2009
Wonderful old adventure movie. It's nice these days to see a movie where the good guys are straightforwardly good and brave, and the bad guys either wickedly bad or humorously cowardly. Errol Flynn was fantastic, with just the right swagger and cocky smile for the role.
Claude Rains is appropriately ratlike as the evil Prince John. Basil Rathbone, who just sounds like he should play bad guys, is quite the villain in Sir Guy of Gisbourne. The Technicolor is indeed glorious (hint for watching Technicolor movies: make sure you turn the lights in the room off).
The action scenes are quite exciting. The whole movie has a lighter-than-air, humorous, lively quality to it. This is the way they used to make 'em.
