Review of The Adventures of Robin Hood (1938) by Michael C — 30 Aug 2009
In many ways, this is the film that has probably been one of the strongest influences on the modern action film. Even if you haven't seen it, several of the scenes would look immensely familiar due to how many times its been emulated.
In fact two films (the parody Robin Hood Men in Tights and the Disney animated Robin Hood film) parallel this film so heavily those who have seen these films will find much of this film highly familiar.
The fight scenes and some of the concepts for filming the fight scenes (the scene of the shadows of the Sheriff and Robin dueling on a column is classic), and still are effectively engaging many years later.
Some of the effects, such as the rather comically understated the sounds of the clanging swords, have been hurt by the evolution of these type of films, but the importance of the film is quite important and still makes for an adventurous film.
