Review of The Adventures of Robin Hood (1938) by Wesley B — 04 Feb 2010
A stunning example of the Robin Hood story, that has aged quite well. I normally don't care much for Robin Hood in most portrayals...he comes off as preachy and arrogant. But in Errol Flynn's adaptation he is smarmy, and rebellious, a man so dedicated to England's true leader he can only laugh in the face of its false injustices. And laugh he did! Errol's smart ass repertoire was still as relevant today as it was then, reminding me of some well loved more recent roles (Downy as Holmes rings a quick bell).
The action was over all impressive, especially when considering its time. Without the crutch of cgi, the movie stood proficiently on great stunt work (I hate to think how many men actually took a day or two off from arrow injuries).
The only real mark on the film was a few, unintentionally comical fight scenes. Still worth the time to watch for anybody who likes good action movies.
