Review of The Adventures of Robin Hood (1938) by Jacob G — 13 May 2010
The animated Disney version of Robin Hood is one of my all-time favorite movies. I've rather avoided the live-action versions, but with the recent trailers for the Russell Crowe version, I've made it a new goal to watch these older versions.
This is first on my list. I found it enjoyable--does some things better than the animated Robin Hood, while failing to dethrone it. Basically, The Adventures of Robin Hood does several key things: 1. It better shows how Robin Hood gained his merry men.
2. Friar Tuck is a much more useful fellow here. and most importantly, 3. The relationship between Maid Marian and Robin Hood is much more believable and textured. Generally a well-done movie, and definitely one I'm glad to now own.
(At the same time, a blu-ray of the Disney animated one cannot come soon enough!).
