Review of The Adventures of Robin Hood (1938) by Jordan C — 03 Jun 2010
Why this film ranks higher then the 1952 Ivanhoe is beyond my understanding.
While there are some entertaining sword fights, the characters are completely flat and do almost nothing to drive the plot. All the treasure Robin Hood collects is pointless as King Richard simply shows up when the movie's droned on long enough. The archery contest scene, which was the closest thing the film had to a midpoint climax could have occurred at any point in the film and had no more effect on the conclusion.
Every character with the exception of Maid Marrian is exactly the same from beginning to end. As a result you get bored of seeing them very quickly and just hope for more archery or swordplay to arbitrarily happen.
