Review of The Adventures of Robin Hood (1938) by Liam K — 08 Aug 2010
Classic films like these never die for good reason. This 1938 Technicolor masterpiece from the director of Casablanca adds the mythology and magical mystique of the legend of Robin Hood on film, but at the same time, add a great grand scale of setting and glamor that would make the story work for an American audience.
Starring the immortal Errol Flynn as the iconic 'Prince of Thieves', he leads an all-star cast of notable stage and screen stars such as Olivia de Havilland as Maid Marian, Claude Raines as the corrupt Prince John, and Basil Rathbone as Robin's nemesis, Sir Guy of Gisbourne. Not only does this film deliver the colorful pallet of action, adventure, romance, and Technicolor, Adventures of Robin Hood beats Ridley Scott's grizzly, yet lame prequel. That says something.
