Review of The Adventures of Robin Hood (1938) by Elliott F — 05 Jun 2011
The Adventures of Robin Hood takes place during, to paraphrase Roger Ebert, an eternal summer of bravery and chivalry. There is such wholesome sincerity in Michael Curtiz and William Keighley's depiction of Robin Hood, the outlaw who stole from the rich and gave the poor.
Errol Flynn's iconic turn as the bandit, Olivia de Havilland's gorgeous turn as Lady Marian, Basil Rothbone's deliciously evil turn as the snaky Sir Guy, and Claude Rains' Prince John, carry the film, naturally, but the film is perfectly cast to every last extra.
Breathtaking set and costume design, impeccable special effects, a legitimately great plot, and stunning Technicolor cinematography help propel The Adventures of Robin Hood to true legend status.
