Review of The Adventures of Robin Hood (1938) by Wes M — 07 Aug 2011
An oldie, but a goodie :].
Very fast-paced, fun flick! This could easily be one of the first "mindless action" movies. Errol Flynn was awesome, gave off this "I don't care" vibe, and made his acting look effortless. Good writing for the most part (cept for one really stupid plot point, but whatev), and it had that signature old movie trait: THEY TALKED SO FAST! I never understood why they always used to say their lines at rapid speed, unless it was to keep audience interest or to mask the fact that they're acting. Idk. O, and another thing that was kinda weird, the music played...and played. And it also played! Like, the whole time, even during dialog scenes. There may have only been 2-3 mins worth of non-music footage. So I looked at the special features, and sure enough, there was a "music-only audio track" haha. But anywho, it's an enjoyable film, very true to the story (unlike the new RH, which I also liked btw). The stunts in this were unbelievable, even for today! And the swordplay was superb. Watch this first if you can, THEN watch Men In Tights, which parodies this...perfectly.
