Review of The Adventures of Robin Hood (1938) by Mya G — 29 Nov 2008
The touchstone of cinematic swashbuckling, this is an unabashedly delightful romp through Merrie Olde England, when heroes could be heroes without having angsty emotional problems and villains cackled malignantly in damp stone castles as they plotted all manner of murder and mayhem.
The banquet melee, the forest ambush and the final duel remain some of the best action sequences in cinema history. I watched this so often as a child that I still have large portions of the dialogue (and the exuberant accompanying soundtrack) memorized.
