Review of The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert (1994) by Deb J — 22 Jan 2008
With snappy dialogue, an impeccable cast and musical numbers to rival most movie musicals, "Priscilla" is a romp of a winner. Forget "Memento" -- here is the part Guy Pearce was born to play.
While some would contest the statement, Pearce stole the show for me as a flamboyant transvestite who can't keep out of trouble. Terence Stamp has a strong, quiet performance as an elderly transsexual, and Hugo Weaving is also exceptional as a hard-faced drag queen conflicted over the past.
I loved it, but critically there are some problems, particularly in the disoriented beginning. However, the film shapes up into a memorable gem.
