Review of The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert (1994) by Rebecca H — 15 Sep 2009
"I've said it before and I'll say it again. No more f*cking ABBA.".
Okay, so men in drag does seem to pop up rather frequently in films I watch. But this one is a bit of a classic.
Tick (Hugo Weaving) is sick of Sydney, so when he gets a gig somewhere in the Australian desert, he sets off with fellow drag queens Bernadette (Terence Stamp) and Adam (Guy Pearce) in a pink bus called Priscilla. Along the way they meet prejudice and cold receptions and realise that perhaps Sydney wasn't so bad. There's a lot of bitching and soul searching to be had, between rehearsals.
This is very much not a plot-driven film. But if you're okay with that, the dialogue is funny, it's all very witty and touching, and the characters are likeable, and that's good enough for me any day.
