Review of The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert (1994) by Jason J — 03 Feb 2011
Absolutely hilarious Australian movie that has three well-known straight actors (played to perfection by Hugo Weaving, Guy Pearce, and Terrence Stamp) portraying two drag queens and one transsexual respectively who decide to leave their seemingly depressing hum-drum lives in Sydney via an enormous pink bus that they dub "Priscilla" -hence 1/2 of the movie's title- for an opportunity to perform nightly gigs at a classy and well-paying hotel-resort several days away on the other side of the country.
All three leads give truly superb on-the-money performances here. The outlandish costumes on show got this movie an Oscar plus its got some of the sharpest dialogue ever put to film. There really isn't one bad aspect about Priscilla.
The gags are painfully bitchy, and come thick and fast, never stopping for breath. This movie just has the almost effortless ability to put a smile on your face, and it never gets boring. Plus, the final scene to Abba's "Mamma Mia" is simply classic.
A brilliant feel-good movie.
