Review of The Adventures of Huck Finn (1993) by Bill T — 16 May 2009
Pretty schmaltzy (and violent) telling of the classic Mark Twain story here. Elijah Wood is extra buggy eyed annoying waif here, travelling down the mississippi with escaped slave Courtenay Vance. The story and their relationship is no shakes and actually quite boring for the first half.
It picks up though with Jason Robards and Robbie Coltrane as a pair of con men with a good idea to get a hold of a deceased fellow's estate. Coltraine and Robards are quite fantastic together, and that produces the film's only true sparks.
Other than that, an overbearing soundtrack, some truly violent and scary scenes (including a very menacing Ron Perlman as Finn's Dad) and scenes that go on forever make this a mighty long voyage up the river.
