Review of The Adventures of Baron Munchausen (1988) by Rainer K — 06 Mar 2012
Visual wonderland meets Pythonesque humour. Terry Gilliam once again creates a movie in his very particular style I love so much.
In a 18th century backdrop he retells the classic German tale of Baron Munchausen, a notorious liar and impostor.
I can't praise the costumes, sets and visual effects enough. It's really wonderful and almost perfectly mirrors Gilliam's crazy mind.
Much credit as well to John Neville, who plays the eponymous hero and anchors the whole silly movie with his incredible performance. Gilliam regulars like Jonathan Pryce and Eric Idle round out the cast who does a decent job as well.
For all fans of Terry Gilliam this will be thorougly satisfying, for all others it's at least a roller coaster ride through the fantasy of an ingenious maverick.
