Review of The Addams Family (1991) by David L — 16 Jul 2016
So often when a TV series is developed into a movie, the script, gags and general entertainment suffers as a result of it becoming more difficult to please an audience over a lengthier period of time. I'd beg to differ in terms of this one as it is great family fun.
Showcasing all the members of the family in a great light, this offers a variety of humour from the sadistic romance between Morticia and Gomez, the unique aspects of Thing, Cousin Itt, and Lerch, to the dry and sharp witted tongue of Wednesday.
The concept itself is more central to the character Uncle Fester, who after 25 years of being away, inadvertently returns with his wicked adoptive mother, who plans to use Fester's family ties to gain access to the Addams' stash of cash.
This proves to be easier said than done as the premises is littered with booby traps designed to amuse the audience with its slapstick comedy. If I had to be critical of any aspect of it, it would probably be the use of some rap version of the infamous theme tune when the credits rolled, as opposed to the more catchier traditional anthem.
This is a mere disappointment in what is ultimately a very easy piece of viewing no matter who the observer may be, and sad to think it would have been one of Raul Julia's last films before he regrettably passed away :(.
